By now you know that Plumbing Medic is available 24/7/365 to handle your plumbing emergencies. No job is too big or too small! But we’ve also created a series of videos to help you with DIY (do-it-yourself) plumbing projects. Below, you’ll find simple plumbing tips from our service manager, Mike Roberts:
1. How to freshen your garbage disposal
Have a bad odor coming from your garbage disposal? Find any type of citrus peels — orange, lemon or grapefruit, etc. — turn on the water, and stick the peels in your garbage disposal.
Turn on your garbage disposal until you stop hearing the peels, and the smells from your garbage disposal should be eliminated!
2. How to find a toilet leak
To locate a toilet leak, simply add 5-10 drops of food coloring into the back and wait 15 minutes.
When time’s up, look in the toilet bowl. If you see the food coloring in there, then you know that you have a leak in between the tank and the bowl.
3. How to fix your faucet flow
Take a small pair of pliers, and spin counter-clockwise to loosen the aerator. Twist off by hand. Once removed, you can take it to any home center and match it up to the original. Twist your new aerator right onto the faucet by hand, tighten with the pliers, and then you’re all set.
4. How to flush your water heater
Run a garden hose outside. At the bottom of your water heater, attach the garden hose to your drain valve, then take a pair of pliers and give it a snug clockwise spin. Open your drain valve all the way. Let the water run for around 5-7 minutes until it’s cold.
5. How to test the temperature and pressure relief valve
Locate the lever on the top of the valve, then flip it up, and flip it back down. This activates the valve and allows water to go through.
