We’re all looking for ways to cut back on our monthly utility bills. As you start to identify areas where you can save — don’t overlook your water heater! Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Water Heater Savings Tips:
Cut Down on Shower Time – A long shower might be a luxury, but cutting down on your shower time can help you save on your water heating bill.
Set Your Water Heater to 120 Degrees F – Many water heaters come preset at a higher temperature, however, dropping your thermostat to 120 degrees F is warm enough to keep your water hot while saving money.
Fix Leaky Faucets – Leaky faucets aren’t just a problem for your plumbing, they can also leave you with a higher bill at the end of the month. According to the Department of Energy, a faucet leaking 1 drip per second can waste 259 gallons of water per month!
Insulate Your Storage Tank – If you have a traditional water heater tank, you can insulate the tank to help keep the heat from escaping.
Insulate Your Plumbing Pipes – Insulate the pipes leading to and from your water heater. This will help keep the heat energy inside and leave you with a more efficient water heater.
Don’t Let the Water Run – Turn off the water when brushing your teeth and washing dishes.
Consider An Upgrade – New water heaters do a better job of saving energy and money than older models. If your water heater is 10 years old, you might be due for a new one.
