When was the last time you took a look at your home’s water heater?
Although water heater maintenance is not often at the top of your to-do list, it is essential to keeping your home plumbing running smoothly. Fortunately, flushing your water heater just once a year is all that is needed to keep your system working efficiently.
When sediment builds inside of your water heater tank, you reduce the efficiency of your system. By flushing your water heater once a year, you can keep it running smoothly and extend the life expectancy of your water heater.
Follow these steps to flush your water heater this summer:
Leave the gas, electric, and water on.
Run a garden hose out of your home to some rocks, or somewhere that can safely drain into.
At the bottom of your water heater, you will have a drain valve. Attach the garden hose to your drain valve and give it a snug, clockwise spin.
Open the drain valve all the way. Let the water run for about 7 minutes, or until the water becomes cold.
