Thanksgiving Foods to Keep Out of Your Garbage Disposal

We love celebrating Thanksgiving with family, friends, and delicious food. However, what many people don’t realize is that holiday dinners can also wreak havoc on your home plumbing system. Certain greasy, stringy, and fibrous foods can clog your sink and damage your kitchen’s garbage disposal. Be sure to keep these Thanksgiving dinner scraps out of your kitchen sink this year.

  • Grease – Whether from your turkey or your green bean casserole, you will find a lot of extra cooking grease around your kitchen on Thanksgiving. Be sure to dispose of any grease in an empty jar that you can throw away after dinner. Although grease looks like a liquid, it will actually harden and stick to the walls of your plumbing pipes, causing a slow draining sink.

  • Potato Skins – Peeling your potatoes in the sink? Don’t let the skin go down your garbage disposal! Starchy foods like potato skins can clog up your pipes and wrap around the garbage disposal blades.

  • Butternut Squash – Butternut squash is a delicious fall vegetable, but it’s important to keep any scraps away from your disposal. Stringy foods can wrap around your garbage disposal and cause damage.

  • Eggshells – Whether you’re making deviled eggs or a spinach quiche, you’ll want to keep eggshells out of your disposal.

  • Bones – Cooking a whole turkey? Keep bones out of your garbage disposal! Hard materials like turkey bones can bend your disposal blades.
