Drip, drip, drip, is the sound of a leaky faucet — which is also the soundtrack of your monthly water bill rising, too. One of the most essential practices any individual can pick up is water conservation. Whether you condense your shower time or use natural rainwater to “bathe” your garden, there are a series of ways to save water — and here are a few of our favorites!
Cut Showers in Half
The most significant way to save water? Cut your showering time in half. Sure, the warm water feels great — but you’re ultimately wasting water in the process, in addition to raising your monthly water bills. If you’re looking for the best solution, then we recommend bringing in a kitchen timer before stepping into the shower.
You’ll want to set the timer to approximately 5 minutes — but anything less than 10 minutes will do the trick. If you continue to keep doing this on a daily basis, by the end of the month, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at your water bill!
Keep the Faucet Off
Another way to save water is to turn the faucet off when you’re brushing your teeth. Of course, it seems quite simple to let the water flow as you brush your pearly whites — but you’re actually wasting water and not saving it.
The best solution? Before you start brushing your teeth, wet the bristles of the brush and fill up your rinse cup with some water. Once that’s complete, shut the water off until you’re ready to rinse your mouth. This will be the perfect way to save water in the long run!
Whenever it rains, it pours — and that water, which could be recycled, typically isn’t collected for future use. One of the best ways to save water is to (you guessed it) collect rainwater. Sure, you’re not going to run around with a bucket during the next shower — but you can get a plastic barrel to do the job for you!
Once you acquire this plastic barrel at your local home improvement store, you’ll then want to get some steel mesh to put on top of the opening — which will keep wild animals and natural debris out of the water. After a few showers, you’ll have fresh, filtered water that will be perfect for watering your plants on a hot, summer’s day!
