If you suffer from year-round allergies, you should take a closer look at your home. While seasonal allergies typically occur in the spring, when the pollen count is high, indoor allergies tend to arise throughout the year. Thankfully, there are several steps you can take to prevent the spread of indoor allergies in your home.
Regulate the Humidity
Humidity that’s either too high or too low can increase the spread of allergens in your home. When the humidity is higher than 75 percent, dust mites will thrive — which could lead to an allergy attack. When the humidity is below 30 percent, on the other hand, the lack of moisture vapor in the air allows germs, dust, and other potential allergens to spread more easily. Therefore, it’s recommended that you keep your home’s humidity level between 40 percent and 50 percent.
Change Your Mattress
When was the last time that you changed your mattress? If it’s been longer than ten years, then it’s probably a good idea to invest in a new one. Over time, mattresses accumulate dust mites, dead skin cells, mold, and other substances that can potentially trigger an allergy attack. Being that the average person sleeps on his/her mattress for 23,000 hours per year, it’s often a primary cause of indoor allergies.
Change the Air Filter
You should also change your home’s air filter on a regular basis. The air filter in your home’s heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) system plays a vital role in creating a clean environment by filtering particulate matter from the air. When neglected, it won’t be able to remove allergens like dust and mold spores effectively. So, change your air filter once every 60 to 90 days to prevent the spread of allergens.
Clean Your HVAC Ducts
Finally, consider hiring a professional HVAC technician to clean your HVAC ducts. The ducts are responsible for guiding warm or cool air throughout your home. If your ducts are filled with either dust or debris, then they’ll spread allergens whenever you turn on your unit.
