Ways to Prevent a Sunburn

Whether you’re prone to get “burnt” or you’re experiencing your first, getting a burn is never fun and can result in irritating, excruciating pain. Before you step outside of your air-conditioned home, here are some pro tips to take into consideration.

Use the Correct SPF

When it comes to sunscreen, it’s important to check the SPF level to make sure that you’re getting the ultimate protection from those harmful UV rays. The EWG states that you’ll want to only use a bottle that doesn’t surpass an SPF of 50. The reason being is that anything over SPF 50 isn’t much different (in terms of protection) and can be rather misleading — which could cause you to stay outside longer and get burnt.

Wear a Hat

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to protect your head and face from the sun is to wear a hat. Whether it’s a baseball cap or a wide-brimmed straw hat, either option will be the perfect solution. While it’s simple to lather on some sunscreen to your face, it’s merely impossible to apply sunscreen to your scalp through your hair — and a bare head is the easiest of targets for getting a sunburn.

Limit Sun Exposure

On average, how long would you stay outdoors on a hot, sunny day? No matter if it’s a day at the pool or catching up on some yard work, it’s important to take a break from the sun once in a while. To do this, you can either find a cool, shaded area and sit there for a few minutes, or you can simply go inside. Doing this will not only help you feel much cooler, but it will definitely limit your chance of a sunburn in the long run!
